IT leadership is not the same as business leadership
Managing an IT environment can differ greatly from traditional management practices. For example, business strategy often focuses on products and markets. In contrast, IT strategy needs to focus on both departmental priorities as well as high-level business goals. So, a course on business strategy won’t help an IT manager to develop an IT strategy. The reality is that IT managers need skills development from those who have been in a similar role. For this reason, all our training programs are uniquely and specifically designed and run by former CIOs. The courses are suitable for all IT professionals, whether they are transitioning from technical expert to IT team leader, or moving from senior IT management to CIO and board level responsibility.

One-Week Residential Courses
Twice a year we run our flagship IT Management and IT Leadership courses at the Greenlands venue in Henley-on-Thames, formerly the country mansion of W.H. Smith. Situated on the banks of the River Thames, this is one of the countries leading learning venues.
The course is run over five days, and most delegates choose to stay on-site at the Greenlands Hotel. Courses start at 9 a.m., a leisurely start for most IT professionals, giving them time to check in with their offices beforehand if they need to. We take a full hour for lunch, again, giving delegates the opportunity to catch up on important issues.
That leaves us the rest of the day to focus on the presentations, break-outs and case-studies. The presentations are typically no more than 45 minutes, but are very specific and rich in content. Additional references and reading are given. The case studies and break-outs are all unique to the types of problem and situations specific to the world of IT. No two courses have ever been the same as we constantly look to keep the courses up-to-date and relevant.
We do not work in the evenings, giving delegates time to share their own experiences and build long-standing relationships. We have drinks in the bar on Monday, and a course dinner usually on Wednesday at a local restaurant. The forging of these relationships is one of the key benefits delegates say they gain from the course. All delegates become members of the IT Leaders private network.
We also run off-site courses for clients at this venue. In-house courses can also be run at the client locations. We have run courses for clients internationally in over 30 locations, from the USA to Singapore, from the UK to Angola.

To paraphrase Steven Covey, author of the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, IT professionals often feel that they are just too busy – too busy even to stop for gas. One of the clear consequences is that they don’t take the time to develop their management and leadership skills. This can be very frustrating, as those managers at the heart of their business’s IT operation see other managers get promoted, while they continue to work long hours.
With this in mind, IT Leaders have designed on-line versions of our residential IT Leadership and IT Management programs. Now in its second iteration, and running on a new Learning Management System, the course delivers content via short (typically 30 minute) videos, supported by practical case studies based on real IT management scenarios.
Delegates who sign up for the on-line courses can join the bi-weekly webinars, providing an opportunity to share problems and solutions. They are also automatically enrolled into our IT Leaders network, a network of over 1,000 IT professionals, the majority of whom are former delegates. They also have direct access to the course director for one-on-one discussions.
